Microfibre...revolutionising healthcare cleaning

Over the last two decades, microfibre technology has revolutionised the cleaning function, revealing there’s more to it than elbow grease or harsh chemicals. Adding microfibre consumables into the cleaning equation boosts the efficacy of traditional cleaning methods dramatically - leveraging the power of molecular science to trap and contain dirt and bacteria that would have otherwise been left behind.

Microfibre cleaning technology has proved ideal in clinical healthcare environments - particularly in a single use format through a system called ‘microfibre charging’.

WHAT IS MICROFIBRE CHARGING?

Microfibre charging is increasingly popular in hospitals and healthcare facilities requiring regular, quick, but comprehensive cleaning of hard surfaces such as floors, benches, bed rails, door handles and equipment.

With a microfibre charging system, a stack of dry, single use microfibre cloths or mop heads are placed in a purpose-specific charging tub or bucket with water or cleaning solution. Once the liquid is absorbed and the cloths are wet, they are accessed one by one as required by carers or cleaners.

While they can be used straight out of the packet for dusting or sweeping, single use microfibre cloths and mop heads are most effective when wet. A charging tub or bucket facilitates this – providing a handy vessel to prepare, store and transport wet cloths or mop heads, ready for immediate use.

With starter kits to equip healthcare facilities to embrace the power and convenience of microfibre charging, and cost-effective refills to maintain it, Haines® is the microfibre cleaning provider of choice for scores of hospitals and healthcare facilities across Australia.

SHOULD YOU CLEAN WITH WATER OR CHEMICALS?

Haines® Single Use Microfibre Cloths and Mop Heads are most commonly used in two ways, depending on the area to be cleaned:

  1. with water or steam, or
  2. with a diluted chemical cleaning agent – typically a hospital-grade detergent, disinfectant or combined detergent/disinfectant.

CLEANING WITH WATER OR STEAM

THE BENEFITS

Use of microfibre cloths and mop heads with water or steam is gaining momentum in healthcare facilities, due to the ability to achieve a high quality clean without chemical intervention.

Cleaning with water or steam is:

  • Cost effective – Saving facilities money on chemical concentrates
  • Better for the environment – reducing chemical contaminants in grey water
  • Safer for staff and patients – reducing exposure to potentially harmful substances
  • Not only safe, but essential near patients with Idiopathic Environmental Intolerance (IEI).

CLEANING WITH CHEMICALS

In higher risk areas or those with less sensitive patients, a hospital-grade disinfectant/detergent must be used in conjunction with water for maximum effect. The most common choice for hospitals and health care facilities in Australia is sodium hypochlorite (commonly known as bleach), diluted with water at a ratio of 1000 parts per million.

NOTE: THE IMPORTANCE OF A CLEANING SCHEDULE

No matter the type or combination of cleaning hardware, consumables or chemicals used, a vital aspect of effective healthcare cleaning is the development of an environmental cleaning schedule applicable to the size and scope of your facility. For more information regarding the development of a routine, refer to fact sheets provided by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care (ACSQHC) – available from Haines® upon request.
